A Celebrated Test Career Concludes

On May 7, 2025, Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma officially announced his retirement from Test cricket. The 38-year-old shared the news via Instagram, expressing gratitude for representing India in the longest format of the game. While stepping away from Tests, Rohit confirmed his commitment to continue playing One-Day Internationals (ODIs).  Here is what he has shared on instagram.

“Hello everyone I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years,” Rohit said with a photo of the Team India Test cap on his Instagram Story.

Test Career Highlights

  • Matches Played: 67
  • Total Runs: 4,301
  • Batting Average: 40.57
  • Centuries: 12
  • Test Debut: November 2013 vs. West Indies
  • Final Test: January 2025 vs. Australia

Rohit’s Test career was marked by significant achievements, including a successful transition to opening the batting and leading India to the World Test Championship Final in 2023.

Captaincy Record in Test Matches

Rohit Sharma took over the Test captaincy in 2022 and led India in 24 matches. His captaincy record is as follows:

  • Matches: 24
  • Wins: 12
  • Losses: 9
  • Draws: 3
  • Win Percentage: 50%

Notably, under his leadership, India secured a 4-1 series victory against England at home.

Challenges and Decision to Retire

In recent times, Rohit’s form in Test cricket saw a decline, with only one century in his last 19 innings. This downturn led him to voluntarily step down from the final Test in Sydney earlier this year.

Focus on ODI Cricket

Despite retiring from Tests, Rohit remains a pivotal figure in India’s ODI setup. He holds the record for the highest individual score in ODIs (264) and has three double centuries to his name.

Leadership Transition in Test Cricket

With Rohit’s departure from Test cricket, the Indian team faces the task of appointing a new captain ahead of the upcoming five-match series against England starting June 20, 2025. Vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah is considered an unlikely full-time successor due to injury concerns associated with fast bowlers.
